what is the deal with the dad? i didnt get it, was he just curious about mc's job?

I think that since he's aware of Mc's issues with his dad he's trying to be somewhat of a father figure to him. Like reasuring him his feelings are valid and giving him a heart to heart when they first met, now calling to congratulate him and encouraging him on his first job, he is probably giving him what he thinks his father should but knows he wont due to their situation
