This is the thing here. They're not nonmarried.

The technical facts don't matter. What matters is that they're still 17-18 years old and yet they're living together, even though Japan allows marriage under 18, it's perceived differently than in our world especially when combined with the Western influences we imparted onto the Japanese. At that point, there's a good amount of contradiction and weird looks being given to the couple. This isn't Sweden. Japan appears quite open and liberal but they're also tightly conservative on a host of other things, they're even reactionary on some issues as well, like immigration, it's practically xenophobia.

In other Asian countries, the social consequences varies.
