Seems like whoever makes eye contact with the "baby" is destined to become its next caretaker. I think it's implied that the "monkey" 10 years later is grandma, who due to the baby's power becomes vigorous enough to live in the forest and constantly traverse it on all fours.
Makes me wonder if the bear they saw was also a deformed human.
