I think probably more of the latter, or probably got caught up in the mood with Pete's laughter too.

Contrast this with the other times we see EC grinning, during his fight with EC and when he's begging the Therapist to kill him.

In those times his smile is crooked and unnatural, and he's trembling uncontrollably, as his glee and fear over his death are fighting each other. Meanwhile EC just seems genuinely happy against Pete.
