Hey all, a bit of an intermission between the previous and next arc. Have you ever push started a car?

I hear so much about the instantaneous feel of a carburetted engine, I wonder how does it feel compared to an electronic injection.

Never did, but I did push few cars that coudn't start, to parking spaces :lul:

I hear so much about the instantaneous feel of a carburetted engine, I wonder how does it feel compared to an electronic injection.
I know someone who put twin weber carbs on a 1.6 NA miata, just for fun.

The miata is a pretty responsive car to begin with, but the carbs really did make it feel really punchy. Huge loss of fuel economy, no consistent power for traffic like shown in this chapter, insanely noisy, and can't pass emissions (especially not Japan's Shaken).

I also drove a Miata modded with individual throttle bodies at Miatas at the gap last year, and that felt even better and had none of the problems carbs do.

The only sports car I've ever driven that came factory with a carb was a Lamborghini Jalpo, and all the carb did was make me deaf. I didn't really get the opportunity to do much, not my car and it was raining.

Way too much when I was a teenager in the 90s, I left the lights on all the time 😅😅 in the last few years just a couple of motorcycles. Push starting really died out in the 80s/90s cars that have electronic fuel injection; you can push them all around the parking lot and they’ll never start…

I’m definitely not an expert and might make a lot of mistakes, plus the sporty cars I’ve had (inc a Miata) have all been fuel injected and the carbs were all old shitboxes so my experience is biased, but I think it’s nostalgiaglasses and wishful thinking. I think they’re cooler but I also know there’s a reason performance throttle-body fuel injection conversion kits exist and it’s not because they look cool.

Unlike the electronic injection system which is regulated by a computer with reference to existing sensors to output fuel discharge during sudden acceleration so that fuel is more efficient and the vehicle's speed is smoother. The carburetor will immediately release fuel according to the throttle opening, the advantage is that you can feel instant power (torque) at low RPM compared to the electronic injection

Push starting really died out in the 80s/90s cars that have electronic fuel injection; you can push them all around the parking lot and they’ll never start…
I daily a 2005 Pontiac Vibe with the base 5 speed manual. If the key is set to the 'on' position in the ignition and there's enough battery to get fuel to the injectors, a push/pop start is guaranteed. I do this when leaving my local Burger King every now and then since the parking lot is on an incline. My understanding is that at a sufficient speed, dropping the clutch in 2nd gear will spin everything when the clutch engages--the crankshaft, and by extension anything connected to the rank pulley via accessory belt including the alternator. If the alternator is working right, that helps provide power to the spark plugs and you should get ignition without needing the starter motor.

Huh… starting with my shitbox 1990 mirage I never had it work again. I’ve just assumed that the ECU just wasn’t having any of it. That’s pretty cool that yours works.
