2 years late but, well that is common practice in Indonesia. I really want to use "common sense" since it's like a very well known myth, but it's everything but sense.

I think what happened here is the reverse. It's the new store's owner who cursed the older store (Mrs. Mul's) in order to hoard all the customers for himself.
