@ Nep the version that was read to me, the wolf’s belly was opened with scissors. I don’t know if that’s on the original version, though the point the manga made was that the newer versions gave them a happy ending.

Also in Mary Skelter they draw references to multiple versions so though they have the grotesque motifs from the first versions, they also reference later depictions.
