I think she just sees Max as a good friend, she's vulnerable etc, but I can't see a really romantic feeling between them. But Max should definetly come clear with Joy about this, and specially about Esther ex-boyfriend situation.

But yada yada we need drama to move the plot so that's ok

I feel like the romance aspect is pretty clearly established, but that's just my interperetation of certain things that Esther has said.

Like, for example in the chapter(s? idr) where they go to the mall together, Max asks her if getting a gift for Joy wouldn't just be pressuring her, and in response she says something like: "Well you don't jump straight in with the pretense of romance or you'll put them off. You create situations where it feels natural for you two to close that distance with one another, that way it doesn't feel like pressure."

And that pretty much 1 to 1 mirrors how she's been interacting with Max up until now, which I don't see as a coincidence. Not to mention that in the panel while she's saying that, from how her expression is drawn it feels like she could be talking about more than what she's literally saying.

But yeah, it's just little things like that. It's nothing as overt as what Joy has going on, where she's grown to very clearly feel jealousy towards Esther and most recently possessiveness towards Max, but Esther and Joy just express themselves differently. Esther is a much less straight forward person, but the signs are all there imo.

Also, the being vulnerable because she's sick thing is fair, but she literally does say "I should find a boyfriend like you before it's too late" in this very chapter. You don't tend to write that kind of thing into a story if it's meant to be handwaved
