I'm not particularly bothered with Shimada being an opportunist, i actually hope even this Damemaru will turn out to be kind of a grey character. The bunch of 4 "evil" guys, as the Solar Mass call them, not being in fact the nicest of guy only makes the story more spicy and interesting, and it also adds rooms for development. And in any case they still look nicer than the Solar Mass.
