Well the thing is, the engagement involved the other party family member. Even if the father want to cut off the engagement, he can't just say "My daughter dont want to get married, and want to live a slow life in a countryside." So easily. I bet the other noble family member wont like that decision after agreeing to married their son to his daughter after the father, which is the one who suggest that. And it could lead to potential war or conflict for the nobles that got involved (lotus, and i forgot).

Depending on their laws too. I've read at least one other title where an engagement between aristocratic houses is also considered a legal and binding agreement. Calling off the engagement has legal and political consequences, and a slighted party might even be entitled to reparations.

Now that's a balanced power scaling, Ganoark was supposedly the shield of the kingdom so the patriarch of Ganoark shouldn't be pushover that a slightly exceptional school boy can defeat easily, it is a fresh subversion if I can call it that because 15 years ago this is the mainstream plotline.
