Do you want a story that you could take basically any chapter let someone read it, and watch them go "wtf" as they are confused about what they just read?
Or do you want a manga you read at the library or public transit, and get really weird stares after people look over your shoulder?
And have a story thats actually pretty good overall, with a good cast of characters?
Well boy do I have a manga for you. This sh*t is wild. Words do not easily express how crazy it is.
Like just a small taste, is the opening revolves around Yokai and Aliens trying to steal the two MCs genitals. And future arcs revolve around the search for MCs stolen magical golden ball(testical). Another arc has it be used to bring about a alien invasion.
This story goes hard with mixing disturbing stuff of nightmares, with action, comedy, and even top shelf romance developing in the background. It also enjoys flipping your perspective on people or events that occur. You 100% will have at least 1 character you hated at first who grew on you as they grew from their experiences, that you now like.
The romance side of things is way better than it should be. So good it honestly could be used as a case study for future shoujo authors to learn from. This author gets the awkward flirting and development of feelings for that age group down pat, in a way that melts your heart. And characters don't beat around the bush much, or have lasting miscommunication, or sit around for forever just to find out their feelings.
And then you have the characters themselves. To be honest half of them I really didn't like at first and found annoying. But then they grew on me and they developed a bit and settled into really nice dynamic with each other.
The two main characters are really great. The guy is a non confident loner, who has a heart(and balls) of gold. He stands up when it matters, and pushes forward with a spine. I really can't think of another character quite like him, just really well done and unique in manga. He just is a really wholesome spirited guy you want to root for.
Female MC is textbook perfect. She is powerful(very), but not in the forced "I am girlboss hear me roar" try hard way. She both solves the teams problems and is the core component of their success, but she also is perfectly fine and happy to rely on others(typically Okaren) to save her in some damsel moments. She can be fiery and bold headed, but also sweet and reserved. Flirty and proactive, but shy sometimes. It reminds me a bit of Suki in Avatar, how she is fierce and strong, but also feminine and sweet.
I really just can't express how good I find the chemistry and interactions of these two. Very few series with characters that age do I find this excellent.
The negatives.
Basically I have 2 problems with this series.
First, is that you can definitely feel the intended audience(s) for this series with how it is done. From the generally loose plot progression(monster of the week style). To the sometimee childish/inappropriate humor and stuff that goes on. Like there is a cursed relic that is the briefs that a yokai wore. It can fall flat and feel childish sometimes to older readers.
The second is that there is a lot of panels of various characters in their underwear. A good amount of times it actually can be funny or add to the story, even if just as a sort of running joke. But it still just happens way to much for male and female characters. On the plus side, these scenes are not played up like other series may have. Nor does the author go super suggestive with posing when it happens. It's actually handled/used more maturely than most works, even if it is done for a more childish reason or some fan service. Too much of it, fairly tasteful(it's not Fairy Tale or anything).
Anyways long review over. I still go wtf at the bizarre happenings, but a this point I have accepted anything bizarre could happen. This was a story I wasn't sure about at first and for a little early on, but now It will be one I delightfully enjoy weekly as new chapters come out. It's not perfect, but damn is it fun and good at what it does well.
