You are not misremembering. It was part of the background worldbuilding near the beginning of the series - this whole "1 to 5" situation is a relatively recent development, and the government of Japan hasn't caught up to this shift in demographics, so polygamy hasn't been codified.

But there are non-monogamous relationships within the world in an "unofficial capacity" (in the eyes of the law, specifically), but the examples we've seen sorta seem like it's one guy with lots of women hanging onto him with covert jockeying for "closer proximity" to said man.

So there might be "healthy" iterations, but I don't believe we've been shown any.

But then again, in Japan they do have a problem with women spending unhealthy amounts of money in hosts (men as well), so the author may have a lot of sources to get material for this.

Gonna be honest, i like how they portray relationships or the wanting of one, the whole "more women than men" context is to allow for exaggeration, but the issues or how they react is pretty good and can be applied to any gender really, though since at the beginning they mention talks about a polygamy law, i´m kind of expecting this to relax the "real" part in the future.

Except that we've been given backstory that shows he's had relationships blow up in his face over his "being nice to everyone" in the specific way that he does it.
And even if those past relationships ended because the girl had a twisted interpretation of his conduct toward other girls, he's doing the exact same thing here - and in a world where the ratio disparity between those two genders brings forth all manner of anxiety and aggression in women over fighting for limited male attention.

And it's not been that long; I do address that, and part of the issue of perception is that this is monthly so we get close to a year IRL for like a week in-story or so.

But he just seems completely ignorant of everything around him. Maybe it's just me, but if I woke up and found myself in an entirely different universe, I would have my head on a swivel getting the lay of the land and paying attention to everything to make certain I didn't run afoul of things being different than my home.

Boy's got no survival instincts and it's gonna bite him in the ass eventually.

I think it's because he was nice to everyone like he was to her while in a relationship with her.
So the way you'd treat and be nice and complimentary toward your SO, and then suddenly they see you doing all of the exact same stuff to every other person you meet.

it's not about not being an asshole, it's about the expectation that you'd reserve certain behaviors for the person you're actually dating who's being exclusive with you. Effectively low-grade pervasive emotional cheating. Which, people disagree on how 'bad' that is, but enough of it and you stop feeling like you're actually anything special to the person, and why would you want to be "in a relationship" with them, at that point?

I'm not saying he was kissing every girl he met, but I can see a world where his girlfriend could understandably get jealous if he's calling other girls' outfits pretty and paying the exact same amount of attention to them as he does to her, and never prioritizing her time with him because of it.

Nice & polite people are great. But dating someone like that and feeling like you're not special to them, would wear a person down over time.
