She genuinely wants him to be happy, but she also needs to know if there's really a chance for her if she chooses to make a serious move of her own. She tells herself it'll be fine either way. (This is, of course, quite the whopper.) This is also only the first part of her test. The next stage is even more insane and will eventually backfire on her spectacularly.
