Your comment made me curious so I went looking and found this Anthropometric Study of the Stomach. If I read this right Men have a bigger stomach on average."The length of the GC was significantly longer in the men than in the women (22.4±3.1 cm vs. 21.2±2.9 cm; P=0.003).", and as men are (on average) taller that also gives them a stomach size boost "The GC was significantly longer for the taller patients, with lengths of 21.7±3.0 cm, 22.3±3.0 cm, and 22.8±3.3 cm for heights <160 cm, 160 to 170 cm, and >170 cm, respectively (P=0.003)"

A funny thought tho is large breasts can effect your BMI and "The length of the GC significantly increased as BMI increased", so maybe Junpei should be getting a ability to eat buff from her chest. :dogkek:

Do note: "Data were retrieved for 851 patients who underwent total gastrectomy at the Seoul National University Hospital between 2008 and 2013." So while the means of the data are good, the sample size is a bit on the small size.

Thanks for the chapter!
this is interesting but while the difference is statistically significant, I’m skeptical how much a 1.2 cm difference (the length of one pea?) actually matters in terms of how much you can eat

What most baffles me is people eating unrendered fat. Chewy gross globs. Just why?
If the fat is hot, it isn't chewy - it's soft and melty. This is a good way to judge whether a steakhouse knows what they're doing - is the ribbon of fat around the outside of some cuts edible or not?

Actually a fair bit; the stomach is quite elastic so a small difference in base size can result in a significant "expanded" capacity.

In what, exactly? Doggy bags aren't especially common outside the US, from what I understand.
Well of course you can't put ramen broth in a bag...

But seriously, it'd be a shame if Japan had the culture of massive food waste a lack of takeout containers would imply. I hope that is not true.
Can only speak for myself, but eating fast and chewing very little is a great way. Gives me mad acid reflux, though.
I... I don't think that expands your stomach capacity. And what about savoring the food??

Why wouldn’t it be allowed to just take the uneaten portion home?

Putting aside that this is not really a thing over there, she went a Ramen Jirou, a very particular type of ramen subculture.
Here's an article on it: https://ramenbeast.substack.com/p/ramen-jiro-japans-most-infamous-food
tldr: it's the cheeseburger of ramen. big on portions, big on garlic, big on fat, big on salt, heavy, no delicacy or refinement, staff bordering on rude, no patience for newbies or tourists. if you go there, you should go knowing what you want and knowing your limits, and the chef will chastise you if you ordered too much.

It sounds like typical working men's food/fuel for low cost hard days grind.

500 grams? That looks more like 5000 grams, aka 5 kilograms of noodles. half a kilo of noodles is nothing. I have 150 grams of noodles in one meal and it's not even a tenth of the picture.

Two tropes in one!
Smaller stomaches and a big eater girl!

It’s pork back fat cooked until soft. Not exactly rendered fat, but it has a sort of rich, slippery texture that melts in your mouth like a savoury creme caramel

Serious Eats has an article on tonkotsu ramen.
