I understood it differently. As in, the handmaiden ran away with Tiara before the kid could get killed. There was no passing off. Alas, the handmaiden got caught.

To "pass off as" doesn't mean to physically pass something to another, it means "to misrepresent something as".

The handmaiden definitely did run off with Tiara, though, but she was likely already a target of execution before that, for knowing the inconvenient truth.

Yep, that's what I was going for.

Also I don't know if the TL was edited between when I first read it and when I went back to confirm something, or if I misread it from the start, but I thought it had referenced that the handmaiden was also mentioned as being Tiara's mother, whereas now it says that "the woman Tiara believed to be her mother was the handmaiden".

So if I misread it, then that's on me, but if it was edited for clarity's sake after the initial posting, then at least it avoids that ambiguity now.

because it's pretty common for this kind of narrative to use the stepmother as a villain and sanctify the mother as if it's natural for mothers to love their kids and be good to them.

I'm not doubting they are the same person, just saying I wouldn't be surprised if they aren't since it's not unusual to see a second queen who birthed the crown prince (or is trying to make her son/daugher the legitimate heir) in these stories.

In general, I'm pretty sure there's never more than one "queen". There's concubines, both legitimate and illegitimate ones, but only one "actual crowned woman" who sits beside the king as his lawful wife, and who has legitimate authority over the kingdom.

So I guess I'll have to go back and look - is it confirmed that the king has multiple concubines or something? I guess if the crown prince is the same age as Tiara, there would have to be because otherwise he's definitely not the queen's if she's pregnant with Tiara at that time (unless he's 1-2 years older than the other main characters, then he could be the queen and king's without issue).

Basically I took it to mean "the actual queen is Tiara's mother, making her royalty - but she was born a bastard child because the queen had an affair. To hide this fact, Tiara was passed off as being the handmaid's child instead, until it was determined it was safer to kill Tiara to mitigate the risk of the queen's infidelity being found out - plus to cut off any line of inquiry about Tiara's potential place in royal succession".

At that point, the handmaid ran off with Tiara to save her life, successfully hid her in an orphanage, and was subsequently caught and executed with Tiara left to grow up a commoner, none the wiser.

that's what I got. And Tiara was passed off as the handmaiden's child, but then the queen was like "nah should commit infanticide to hide my infidelity" and the handmaiden instead saved her and was executed for it.

Usually bastards in royalty and nobility manga are from the man. The queen cheated on the King and had a bastard.

A walking talking reminder that 'the queen is a disloyal slut' is pretty inconvenient politically in a Kingdom. It's more convenient to pretend that never happened, sweep it under the rug.

I don't know why everyone seems so sure that the queen cheated on her husband? Tiara might have been conceived/born before her mother ascended the throne or married. Having a child as an unmarried woman was considered a black mark in archaic societies, so it wouldn't be a surprise if everyone around the queen tried to hide and later eliminate Tiara.

I think people are assuming the story is over just because the recent chapter titles are called "Ending" even though that's clearly just because a "Game Ending" is happening in the story, something which the MC just as clearly intends on overturning.

If it's not axed, it seems like asspull questionable writing. If it is axed, that's pretty standard fare to just abort out of whatever was planned to wrap things up as quickly as possible.

ooooh okay sorry. I meant to say that similiar stories have the mother die and then the new stepmother (who would be the new queen) rises to abuse the child from the previous one. There's no indication of that being the case, it's just that it's also common for it to be revealed latter if the story is not primarily set within the royal pallace.

it's an easy conclusion to think that the new queen who just had a male heir would try to kill the possible opposition for her son's rule.
