Nobody said that Gotou was guilt free, but it sounds like you're the one trying to absolve Agawa of the mistakes she herself is clearly cognizant of. Yeah sure Gotou is hurting himself and Akito more-so by refusing to say no to any girl's advances, including Kiyomi who he's also doomed to hurt, and not being brave enough to talk to Agawa personally. But it was Agawa who didn't want to accept his full feelings for her, encouraged his promiscuity, and when it cost her his former passion for her; she insulted his manhood out of her own frustration.

I wouldn't call it hypocritical to regret a decision you made prior to the consequences of that decision becoming apparent.

If we must be philosophical, while I won't deny a young man some degree of agency, encouraging an impressionable person that trusts you to pursue a risky activity is a wrong in of itself. In situations like that popular hypothetical you repeated, the person who does the telling often sees a jail cell as a result of encouraging a behavior that results in death.

Agawa's biggest offense was deeming Gotou as unworthy of having confidence because he didn't have the looks nor charisma to back up that arrogance. And even if she apologized, it felt like a shallow one.
