I'm guessing that she didn't realize that he was already at the school, and since she was looking outside the school gate, that implies that she was waiting for someone to enter which implies that it was still morning and school hadn't started yet.

There's also the possibility that despite the two being childhood friends, the two of them don't live near each other, at least not close enough to be next door neighbors. As such, she didn't know when he arrived.
