Honestly, that's a big surprise for a B rank spot. I assume that the fact that the ghost seems to pick out the targets one by one means that the people can escape if they sacrifice one of their own.

The ghost doesn't directly kill its victims, it just drives them insane then immediately hides itself so it does fit the low rank assignment since most people won't even notice its existence or how dangerous it actually is.

Chapter 81

After the whole "do something about him" spiel last month, we're just going with the old saltwater solution huh?

Good explanation for why this trick hadn't been utilised up until now, can't command or summon while your mouth is shut. It's like casting silence on yourself.

Tanden (丹田)

To elaborate on this some more, the Tanden AKA more famously the Dantian in Chinese is like the source or reservoir of the Qi/Chi/spiritual energy that resides in one's body, which then flow throughout via the meridians.

You can equate them to India's belief in the Chakra I suppose. Heck, a common trope in Chinese Wuxia novels is that having one's Dantian wrecked will permanently shear down a martial artist's full potential, if not outright cripple them from practising it anymore.

(When I saw the use of Energybending in Avatar the Last Airbender, I thought it hearkened to this trope)

The Dantian is believed to be located around the navel area according to traditional Chinese medicine, though it's pretty much theoretical and can't really be equated to a single physical organ. But go figure that Kondou-sensei decides to make this an intangible spiritual organ that also serves to house the "seat" of one's soul. One can only imagine how much energy Keitaro's carries.

The Ghost

Can I just say that the flashback of the victim this time feels especially horror movie-like? Ordinary life, stumble into escalating terror, the expert figures out what's going on but also fell victim, then it concludes with one of those bad endings where the protagonist dies and the horror monster wins?

(Oh, and in case it wasn't clear, the mother suicided via carbon monoxide or something using a brazier)

On my first read and seeing this ghost avoiding detection by even Yayoi, I wondered if he's also using Onmyoudo techniques for concealment. I was delighted to see I was right.

A well-trained spiritualist who died and became an evil spirit and now uses his old skills to terrorise the living. Terrific, and obsessed with researching the Dantian?

I'm guessing Shami's sister and her crew never even encountered him when they last visited the place for her channel is because he only bothers with more isolated targets... Well, B-Rank or no, if we're bringing Warrior with us to this place, his lethality must warrant his presence..

--

So how to find it? Usually would've picked High Priest or Sergeant for a field-wide catch, but they're not here. Will Eiko's curse help trace Keitaro's soul?

And that's before we can figure out what it's doing to make attacks pass through it. Never mind Hariti's Finger, the Black-Hair rope wasn't able to hit anything even while the ghost's hands were occupied with the concealment handsign. But whatever the trick is, our Warrior will probably penetrate it.

But even if we do capture it, it's too knowledgeable, I don't see how Yayoi can keep this thing under control. Maybe we just feed it to one or ours? I'm surprised it hasn't done a Replacement yet.

Fair point here.

I mean, the location ranks are independent from the graduate status.

bro cant use tao anymore he got his tanden removed like its jigokuraku 😂😭 (if anyone knows any other series w/ that tanden stuff pls lmk)

very interesting how the onmyodo techniques are coming back already! like they did technically fight against probably the absolute pinnacle of onmyodo mastery (kami-sama), so i am doubly surprised to see them struggling so much with the new ghost (a B rank at that!).

nonetheless, i think this is a much needed segue for yayoi to finally understand the importance of learning onmyodo, since i still felt like that “becoming a spiritualist trainee” arc kinda got bailed out when yayoi + her teacher agreed that she should continue capturing ghosts like usual instead of actually mastering the techniques (except for ig the shikigami one in the future?)

Holyshit, that's damn scary. The ghost that just stole your soul and left the body that is trying to find its own soul behind.

Really almost every ghost in this manga can one hit KO any regular person haha. The power ranks are only relevant for exorcists who can actually do something about them.

Interesting spirit-based lore there. I believe something like this was also referenced in Bleach—with the soul chain and the source of spiritual power being located around the solar plexus.
