Yeah, It's a good thing the protag exists because there's a general moral grey in all of this. Both fighters see really only that the other one has doomed their existences when there is a way to just to understand each other.
The problem is that the group hasn't learned anything nor have they realized that their actions have consequences. We've seen that the Gorilla is leading the way towards a better future but he isn't in charge and doesn't represent the majority.
