I feel you, but I have seen this in real life. Some girls are cowards. Heck, I know someone that has had threesomes and foursomes with the girl shes in love with but was still too scared to ask her out because it could ruin the friendship, so she never did and now the other girl is engaged to someone else. They're still friends and they both seem happy with that, but like, what could have been, you know?

I'm not saying that something like this is impossible in real life
I'm just saying that after reading almost every GL manga on this site, I'm really tired of seeing this exact same trope over and over again for the 10000th time. And it never gets better or more creative, it's just LITERALLY the same.

Well, I'm hoping for Emi to decisively step forward next time Soprano makes Mirei suffer and it'll end up with at least one slap and Emi confessing to Mirei in front of Soprano. And then, it'll become the famous training arc before the tournament.

Internalized homophobia would fit better if she was disgusted with herself for having feelings for Soprano, not if she just assumes it doesn't make sense for two girls to be together. Comphet works perfectly fine for women who don't think they have any interest in dating because their only options have been men, because it's not really about the men.

Emi is absolutely in love with Mirei.

She's just Soprano's opposite, narrative-wise, and is taking the "I can't confess without hurting my crush so I'll settle for being her closest friend" role.

My best guess -

Is that Soprano is in love with Mirei. But She's in love with the Mirei from before; in the four years they were apart, Mirei's closed off a lot, shut down, and retreated into herself, and Soprano is stuck trying to rekindle something that isn't there, and is now...effectively "forcing" Mirei to turn back the clock in a way that's just not possible or healthy.
Emi-chan describing Mirei in the way she did this chapter does conflict with the Mirei we see in Soprano's flashbacks, after all - and that disconnect is at least part of the current tension between them, and why Emi's accusation toward Soprano in "forcing" Mirei, holds some water.

If I'm right, then she is - because Mirei's changed too much, though I'd have to re-read to see if we got a reason (falling out with classmates that lead to becoming introverted--I might be conflating with another title on that, though).

Which, could represent a path forward where Soprano switches gears and builds Mirei back up in terms of confidence, or something.
Or we continue getting this unsettling quasi-yandere plot with Mirei getting cornered by an overly-attached Soprano until something snaps.

Guess we'll see, though.

The reason she became so closed off is because she regretted refusing Soprano so harshly when they were kids. She thinks it's her fault Soprano left and that kinda broke something in her. In the flashback about how Mirei got to be friends with Emi, she clearly said she lost a friend by being to straightforward when talking so now she just doesn't say anything that could lead to confrontation.
