There is no need to start the exam like this. They are kids, not adults serving in the Special Forces. There is never a situation where someone is expected to rush out to battle/work/emergency, without even receiving time to dress up and equip themselves. This is just the author trying to make the MC look smart by making the world around him weird.

Also, what if someone prefers to sleep in the nude? Will they have to walk around in a forest naked?

Art style is so close to aldehyde's I had to check that it wasn't. By the way, the artist is correctly tagged, but this is based on a light novel so author tag shouldn't be the same as the artist.

I can already imagine what would have happened if she was the main character that ranked above that resentful prince.

Girl should count her blessings he's fixated on the MC instead of harassing the both of them for knocking him into 3rd place.

I don't mind the author taking creative liberties like this in moderation. As long as the other student is correct in that the exam area is cleared of hostile entities and all but benign hazzards it should be fine. In some sense it just adds a bit of flavor to the setting.

OTOH the stories with a social setting of comically overt cruelty and abuse just feels like the author is trying to hard to make up for their lack of imagination.

And I will counter with what teenager in their right mind would share a student dorm with another student and sleep in the nude? Sure I could see pajamas, and or sheer night gowns, but complete nudity would be seen as abnormal.

On a side note, this would only be an issue for students without alumni parents, or advisors. Even if cryptic, the dorm perfect did warn the new students to be prepared at a moments notice for the exam to start. Alumni parents would be even more explicit. So while there should still be more then a few that are caught out unawares, the majority of the class should be prepared for the challenge ahead.

damn this test started out on hell mode.
To be fair, chapter 4 already showed the school was in sh*t mode with the pseudo-duel. Right now we can still argue its only on "hard mode" because he is a commoner.
This "test" is looking like the start of a normal survival game where the player has nothing but whatever is on said player.
If I have to guess from chapter 4, it ain't gonna be hell mode until he gets his own flaming dragon, burns his rivals to ashes, and leaves the school scorched while being pursued by the kingdom for being a "demon".

I feel no shame in saying I barely remember anything about this.

Aren't you confusing modern day sensibilities with a fantasy world with magic and monsters? This is the same as saying Naruto should be able to take it easy in a village training ninjas because he's 12.

While not inaccurate, it still doesn't match with the reality of that world.

No, I'm not. Even in a fantasy world with magic, nobody will ever be in a situation where they are sleeping at home, and the very next second they are fighting for their lives. It might happen while travelling, but people are more careful while travelling as compared to while in their bedroom. That's the point I was trying to make. If the point of the test was to test them in an emergency, there are better ways to do so, instead of throwing them in the middle of a forest with no instructions.

As for your point about Naruto, their age wasn't what I was taking offence with. Yes, Naruto started at 12, I've stopped caring about the absurd ages authors use. The problem I had was with the training itself, not their age. Oh, and even talking about Naruto, they students actually learnt stuff at the academy and with their team's assigned Jounin before being thrown in the meat grinder. The kids here have not yet received a proper class. They have not been told anything about what to expect.

TLDR: The 'test' is stupid, and unlike Naruto the Academy has yet to teach the students anything to help them prepare for the 'test'.

While I understand your point, we don’t know nearly enough about this world to know what they need to prepare for. Being a mage is probably a super dangerous job. And while random teleportation may not be the norm, being prepared for anything at a moment’s notice is still a good lesson to live by.

Especially if most mages are weak to situational changes and CQC.
