@Niconicoknee true, nowadays it's switched. But I'm glad about this little detail. It's historically correct that the poorer you were, the darker your bread was. But that rice bread seems a bit... Rice has no gluten, so you can't make bread with it.

@DonGiovanni She wasn't saying they ate rice bread, but that they ate rice and the other place ate WHITE bread, meaning it was made using polished or bleached flour.
@Niconicoknee that's because rye is less common and thus more expensive in our world. It used to be one of the most commom cereal grains, especially in northern latitudes, where is grows well despite the cold.

@The5thSeraph a bundle of straw would be luxury, a stick is more likely... at that point picking up some grass/leaves is just better option

Public bathhouses were common for the peasantry in cities and popular. They also often doubled as...well, "bathhouse" has a connotation for a reason. Bread was generally used as a form of eating utensil to help scoop food or push it onto, say, a spoon, and to mop-up soup after you had finished eating/drinking it.

Wow; I think I'd rather live in Europe in the 1300s...
Most peasants, merchants, and nobility would bathe 3-to-5 times a day when it was warm, and they all (almost ALL!) used linen to wipe their bum... which was then washed away with scented water (from flowers).
This terrible place where they have almost no hygiene makes me remember just how filthy Feudal Japan must have been, when comparing it to places with huge bathing cultures like China, Germany, France, and other Eurasian cultures...
(Feel free to check Jstor; Eurasia, from Portugal to Beijing, bathed multiple times a day until the 1800s)
