The first half was very very good (until chapter 58 or so), then it went progressively downhill. It just went worse as it went on, the author continuing to milk a dead cow turning to a smelly rotten carcass... It was really a disappointement after such a good beginning to have a subpar second half.

First half is very good suspecting, keeping you on the edge of your seat however the second half is kinda a miss for me.
It just didn't have the grip it had from the first half. It feels like a drag near the end.

I only finished it because I got that far and felt that I had to finish it.

Yep, we all know when L died it went downhill. Hands down for the first half of story, one of the best psychological battle ever.

I remember way back in the day when the American Shonen Jump magazine published the first chapter as a one-off. Hooked. I read that one chapter over and over, no other manga had immediately left that kind of impression on me. It lead me to eventually buying a volume for the first time.

@NinjaInPants I don't think the second part was bad, only that the first part was a masterpiece, that's why when L died a kind of void was created in the plot, and to fill it they had to create not one, but 2 characters similar to L, and not even so were they enough to fill the void left by this.
however, as I mentioned, I don't think the second part was bad, in fact I liked the ending (in the anime, now I'll read the manga)

Self reflecting as a adult now, Kira might have been a edgy savior syndrome kid but he definitely made a impact in history. While evil tries to enrich themselves through their short lives, there will be people who were saved by circumstance despite Kira killing at random and prejudice who then would worship him despite the fact that it was partly a moral thing to stop him from being a tyrant with infinite power. People long to be righted but are powerless to do so, no matter the reality of how right or wrong they are to seek their recompense, Kira did the 'impossible' to help a random person who would deem it as "a act of God." Light truly lost his way since the day he picked up the book but despite failing to become a evil god tyrant, he changed the world and people literally worship him as a messiah so the story didn't end on a empty note. I'm typing this now because for a long time since a teen, I always felt Light was cheated of a victory but it was for the best and it simply ended in the way it's suppose to: the good guy who was caught up with too much power and had good intentions until it corrupted him and he was put down but at least his vain efforts weren't too far from the mark.
