I wonder, are those diet tips actually based on something or are they just Japanese superstitions? I can see why avoiding fats and sugars might help, but what benefit is gained from chewing your food all the way and eating dinner early?

Some of that has some effect, some of it has effect but for other stuff and some of it is just weird stuff. Chewing food thoroughly indeed does help with your masticulation and metabolism (properly chewed down food with time for you saliva to function), but on weight loss itself the biggest effect involved is probably that you spend more time on eating smaller amount of food. During sleep you also have very different metabolism than during awake, but again, body composition manipulation cares more about what you eat and how much. Also fats and sugars are literally all but proteins from your usual macros, so cutting them out would mean eating pure protein powder and water. Without mentioning how necessary both of those are, I couldn't even imagine the protein farts from such a diet. So, again, better to concentrate on healthy ratios and the total amount.

Yeah, you aren't listening to an actual doctor or nutritionist, but a mangaka with a probably pretty tenuous understanding about anything related. Many such cases.
