No Crim was born male but also inherited his mother's traits (IE: Noble red) thus his body was always in conflict with itself because noble reds are always female. Basically they put him in the equivalent of a nanomachine modifier and his subconscious picked if he wanted to stay as a male or be a female and his body was reformed as Crim. Basically when Crim was younger he om nom nom'd the sister and that's how they realized he had traits of the noble red in him
