I read a theory that Ran could unwillingly get Amuro into trouble with the BO. If Ran mentioned Amuro's police days while Rum is within earshot distance(keep in mind Rum hinted he was looking for traitors), it could lead to a crisis.

I went to school for chemistry technician many years ago, this was one of the experiments teachers did on our first day in lab. I don't remember much of the others, except one where teacher would spread clear liquid one would swear is water, but it would burn green when ignited. This was to demonstrate importance of keeping track of what is in which container.
