A lot of hints in this chapter so I think I know what happened.
Spoilered my theory so don't click on that if you're still thinking.
Hoegi (the guy with a cap) did it.
He placed the bug prank item under the phone to make the first victim fall. It seems unlikely that the phone would fall on the ledge and the prank item fly through the window into the room so I might be wrong about this part.
The poisoning was done with an ice cube containing the poison. It had time to melt between Jinmei taking a sip and the drink finally reaching the second victim.
The video shows him looking up even before the first victim falls, that's what the second victim noticed.
God that Sera is such a pushover idiot. Why would she resorts to such underhanded tactics to reveal Conan's secret, if she is smart wouldn't she know that Conan isn't related to the MIB except that he is a victim.
If it was an ice cube though, the posion would still show in the drink right? Since it would melt and mix in with the drink. He took a sip through a straw so you can't say he ate the ice cube itself.
At this point I think it would be in Shinichi's best interest to let Sera know who he is. Unlike Ran she's clearly not buying his stories and won't give up. Similar to when Heiji found out, I think it's time he lets her know and asks her to keep it a secret - I guess he might still not entirely be sure which side she's on though, plus he's also got Ai's identity to keep hidden, too.
@doradora - I wouldn't exactly call simply asking questions 'underhanded'. She tried asking him directly and he denied it, so she has no choice at this point. She's asking Ran questions to get more information so she can work a different angle, as well as putting pressure on Shinichi so he either fesses up or panics and slips up.
Also, why does the killer even have poison? Ostensibly, the poisoning was only planned after second victim noticed something and started threatening the killer.
yeah i definitely think it would be better for shinichi to just tell sera, it would be better if she can keep quiet and they can work together. Is he’s afraid that by telling Sera, he’s dragging her into his problems?
Probably not too far off though. It was likely a capsule loaded into the straw at or above the joint of the straw. If he carelessly loaded a straw with a poisoned capsule into the drink, he'd risk the capsule falling into the shake and dissolving, thereby ruling out his apparent suicide ploy. So instead, he held it by the joint itself, despite the crinkles beneath his grip making it harder to insert the straw. The poison was never in the shake itself, nor had it dissolved before it could mix in with the backwash.
You realize Heiji did the same thing, too, right? He didn't have any motive grander than curiosity like Sera does, but he did everything in his power to make Conan confess to being Shinichi and learn as much as he could.
I'm assuming, it was a back-up plan. Since the victim used the butterfly previously, the killer had to be mindful that the victim might not freak out and fall upon seeing it. In which case, he needed an alternative.
As I typed this out, I hope I'm not right about this being a Plan B. Otherwise, there are too many similarities to Holmes Freak (Chapters 117-121).
@pengwing That actually hasn't been shown yet. We've seen Sera's mother (Mary) as a child, but we haven't gotten any hints to *how* she ended up like that just yet. It's a bit odd to see a brief flashback with narrative referencing it so bluntly, I feel like Aoyama usually has full-fledged flashbacks that span at LEAST one chapter, rather than have a brief but VERY revealing reference in the middle of a case.
Also, more importantly:
What is going on with the Akai father!? The entire reason Shuichi Akai joined the FBI was to investigate his father's disappearance, which was related to the Kohji case. Seventeen years ago. And now we see the mom ended up like this after going to meet with him in London? And judging by Sera's appearance she wasn't much younger than she is now, this was a recent development. So what the heck is going on? Are any of the other Akai siblings aware that he's (apparently) still alive? Do they know what happened to Mary!?
@fennec
Thank you for the response... I only come once every few months to see the last chapter and see if anything interesting happened. So I didn't know about this. And saw a young female, assumed to be adult, which Sera asked about Haibra immediately after. And was in half shock if Haibara gave birth to someone and forgot about it XD (now that I think about it more, she is Sera's age so that was a ridiculous thought)
I vaguely remember Sera being Akai's relatives, is that correct?
i think the murderer is the makeup artist lady. She was the only one who still looking upward after the body fall. Probably to make sure makoto was there to be the suspect. She also volunterer to help distribute the drink, but then found out that the actress also having the shake. Since she cant risk of putting the poison in the cup, she volunteered her straw which possibly has poison in it.
@pengwing
Yes, sera is the youngest sister of akai. She also has another brother, who is a shogi player and also boyfriend to yumi the police traffic officer.
Yeah, I think I fell for the red herring and you're right. I was basing my suspicions on the video because I noticed the guy looking up before the victim even fell and assumed he was stupid enough to make a mistake like that.
Though maybe she was trying to see where the bug fell so she could pick it up?
