What’s the natural progression from fishing? Harpoon weaponry? Underwater exploration? Aquatic mounts? Boat building?

I didn't realize this was by the same guy as Shield Hero. Hopefully there's no weird slavery stuff in this one and it can just be about fishing... (Well, fishing and the permadeath thing whenever that comes up.)

Could someone who's read the novel give some warnings in this regard? I'd rather drop it before I get invested. (Mentions of / the existence of slavery are fine, I just don't want the main character participating in it or for the story to constantly portray it in any sort of positive light.)

I have so far not seen the usage of slavery

how would slavery work in this one? did you even read the manga? any way i gave MTLed a lot of chapters on the LN and i will say you will have no problems.

but i want to ask, why all the hate for the mc participating in slavery? also slavery being portrayed in a positive light? that never happens, and if it does, it's because it's technically not even slavery in those manga. any way, i don't get it... in a lot of manga, killing is portrayed in a good light too for the story, does it mean it's a good thing? no of course not. but it's used to make the story interesting. and i am 100% sure you like stories with a lot of killing (like chainsaw man) which makes it hypocritical.
if you were to ask people, if they would rather be killed or become a slave in a fantasy world where slaves are basically not slaves and are treated like normal human beings, everyone would choose the second one.

any way i don't care if someone doesn't like a specific thing in a manga/novel/anime and drops it because of it. but the way you asked about it in a manga that does not even have a setting that allows slavery to exist, just because the author is the same as the shield hero, it makes me a little irritated. (by the way i am not a fan of the rising of the shield hero, it's just a 6/10 for me)

Well thanks for checking.

But, anyways, I don't think it's that strange to dislike stories where the main character participates in slavery or has slavery portrayed positively? And I think it's fairly different from violence and killing because it is more often than not totally unnecessary. Like, you give Chainsaw Man as an example: There, the violence is what progresses the story; it's what the story's about. In something like Shield Hero, it's not about slavery, it's fantasy story about a guy going to defeat the dark lord or whatever. The slavery is purely gratuitous and the author doesn't really have anything interesting to say on the matter.

Also, slavery is totally possible in this manga if its written as one of the gameplay mechanics, where the slaves are AI. It wouldn't be "real" slavery, but that's basically what I was talking about. And I don't have anything against the author; I just don't want to read something that glorifies slavery for no reason. I only asked because of the whole "similar characters" thing and because some authors just have recurring themes. (Eg. Fujimoto has lots of family death stuff in his manga.)

Also, Re:

That depiction of slavery is actually the one I have a problem with. It basically just ignores all the actual issues with slavery so it can present it as something "cool." It'd be like a story that had people murdering each other all the time but "it's not really murder," so it's all okay. NSFW example: All those creepy "skinsuit" porn-manga. (Please don't look this up if you haven't heard of them. Just trust me: they're disturbing and you'll want to throw up.) Like, that's murder, but the writing just pretends it isn't so it can be some horny thing. My issues with Shield Hero's style of slavery are similar. I'd prefer it if it was the slaves were actually treated as slaves.

But anyways, it seems like there's no slavery here, so who really cares? And if you don't agree with anything I've just typed, then whatever. We're different people, we can have different opinions. Let's just enjoy funny fishing girl / boy, who I'm sure we can both agree is awesome, right?

Hey it's back!

I always think it's silly that these TS VR MMO manga always present guys being in girl avatars as very unusual and bizarre while in real MMOs its very, very common.

I don’t think this character gets involved in shield hero until he enters dimension wave 2 which is after he gets out of this one but I don’t think it happens in this series.

first of all, we already know (it's mentioned twice already) that the game they are in is for all ages, and having npc slaves? that's just the same as having npc companions...

also i don't get what you mean. there are plenty of manga that the mc kills someone because they are annoying, or for a dumb reason and they get away with it, and no one cares. that's also portraying that murder is fine right? but who cares, because this is fiction. that's my point. this type of story it ignores all actual issues with slavery? IT'S FICTION, that's the thing you don't understand, fiction (especially in fantasy) is not made to be a copy of how things work in the real world. and people don't want this kind of real world issues in this type of fiction, unless it makes for an interesting story.

in chainsaw man the mc becomes Makima's slave/dog because boobs. in shield hero, the mc buy's a slave because he doesn't trust anyone, due to what happened to him, and he can't keep going alone because he has very little offensive power. do you see your double standards? look,

i don't care if someone hates something on a story, as long as they don't attack the author or people because of that something, you don't look like that kind of person, but i will say it any way, don't attack people because they made a story with something you don't like. manga are fiction, and you are allowed to have your opinion, but the people that write death threats because of something they don't like, should not be having any opinions in anything (in my opinion).

Wasn't Kizuna's backstory in Shield Hero that she transitioned into that world from playing an MMO with her sisters? This could very well be a stealth prequel.

Dimension Wave is written before Shield Hero

I don’t think this character gets involved in shield hero until he enters dimension wave 2 which is after he gets out of this one but I don’t think it happens in this series.
There is no Dimension Wave 2, this is a separate story.

Please read the manga description

NOTE: Many characters that appear in “Dimension Wave” also appear in “The Rising of the Shield Hero.” However, despite the many similarities, the characters in both series are not related to each other. “Dimension Wave” is not a spin-off of “The Rising of the Shield Hero”, but a separate story in a different universe that shares many similarities.

When did I ever attack anyone or write death threats??? Or even imply that I would?

Like, you just seem to be getting mad for the sake of it. Just calm down. My not wanting to read stories that glorify slavery has nothing to do with you or the sorts of manga you like, okay? We don't have to have the same opinions or tastes and you don't have to prove yourself "right."

I do want to point out that depiction is not the same as endorsement. Nor do protagonists have any sort of responsibility to be moral people or set a good example for the reader. Antiheroes can be very interesting to follow if written right. I personally wouldn't say Shield Hero glorifies slavery, but it does have an antihero protagonist who was willing to buy slaves and thus effectively condone it. But still, I have seen erotic fantasy manga which does glorify slavery and hoo boy does it makes me feel a lot greasier than Shileld Hero does. (i.e. it's the protagonist's first choice and outright ambition to have a slave harem whereas Naofumi was resorting to it out of desperation)

Mind you, I do think Shield Hero is pretty cavalier about the topic and that very understandably turns a lot of people off. Especially anyone who has either studied slavery or whose not-too-distant ancestors literally were slaves. But it wouldn't be a red flag if I met someone new who loves that series. I'd just think they might not be in the habit of interrogating their favorites.

Either way I'm glad we have Dimension Wave which yeah seems to get away from that canon entirely.
