My thought is that Beniten's parents seem very loving in her flashbacks and they apparently hid her for a while, but the village was onto them and probably would've killed all three of them if they didn't get rid of her.

So they probably were planning to kill her that night but that they felt really guilty and morally conflicted about it.

If I'm in that situation and someone comes in and cuts me down and helps my kid escape from me and our bad town I'd feel bad because if the dying part but I'd also feel really happy that they stopped me and hope that my kid could escape to a better future.
