The earlier version it seemed like he was an extreme pragmatist that would even sell himself to get what he needs. If the author felt that was out of character, and needed to immediately undo it a better option would be to have him reflect on his companion's negative response and choose differently in a follow up. That gives closure and development. Going back and erasing it just makes it look like a cheap attempt at shocking the readers that didn't get the reception they wanted. Why does anything that happens matter if it's going to be revised the second there's pushback.
