What is the significance exactly? The slave doesn't belong to him, likely to a slave merchant/another master. I can't imagine it would be lawful for this noble to exert his influence over a slave he doesn't own...what would happen if she was sold? The previous master would tell the next master "yeah you gotta be nice to this one or else that noble is going to get you"?
Yeah, I was wondering this myself... They don't know where she lives or where or who her master even is. All the current master has to do is yeet the pendant....

In ch 4 he mentioned 'privileged class' so he might have a lot more influence than we've seen.

Maybe doing this to someone else's slave is seen as reserving/probing to purchase the slave sort of action?

If nothing else commoners wouldn't mess with her anymore.

Okay, the "commoners won't mess with her" makes sense, but still... the current master still can just hang on to it or sell it or yeet it or whatever.....
If he wanted to buy her, then wouldn't he just get the slave to lead him to her master and buy her off of him that way?

Dude, relax. This manga is just the vanilla version of a hentai! You don't have to think too deeply. Just feel it...with your heart~

From what it sounded like earlier in the series, the guy used to be a member of an incredibly rich/influential family to the point that townsfolk were letting the girls do pretty much whatever they wanted just by wearing the pendant he gave them.

Giving one to this new random girl would likely mark her under the same type of protection and while it is entirely possible that the owner could toss the pendant, they probably would fear whatever type of reprisal could come from going against the wishes of the guys' influence should they ever catch wind of it.

Their dad is such a cool guy, no wonder the girls like him. The guy really deserves an harem, even if he seems to have forgotten about that. I think he just likes to pretend that he is a creepy fuck.

Depends on how high of a rank our guy really is.

Like, imagine if he's a royal, would some random noble really want to insult him by discarding it?

As for going directly to the owner: You missed the 'reservation' part.

He doesn't need to buy her right away, just merely 'showing interest' is enough to string the other party along.

If the merchant come right away, he can definitely haggle down her price given her wounds, so a merchant would be considering the option of healing her wound/giving her better treatment to increase her selling price.

This makes me think of the white elephant story. The idea was that if the king gave a white elephant (something that was seen as special and I think sacred) to nobles that displeased him. Everyone knew that this was him showing that he was angry by forcing you to waste your funds on a basically useless animal that you can't get rid of cause its a gift from the king.
If this guy is the head of a powerful family and people know that the girl is under his protection by that necklace, then they are much less likely to do anything for fear of being on the wrong end of his power and connections.

Its like angering a rich person with enough money to screw you over. buy out all your customers, spread rumors or information that is damaging to you, cause you legal woes by lawsuits or getting the local guards/police to hassle you, maybe has goons to beat you up every night. If someone is in a position of wealth and power, then they have ways to make those that anger them suffer.
