Everyone believed he went through Hoshigasaki's (idk if that's the right name) bag and put a light novels in there for her to read, because she thought they sucked and he wanted to prove her wrong. Obviously that's not actually what happened, but that was the story he told the class to cover for her.

Well, maybe she should stop thinking and just fucking ask then. I really hate contrived drama caused by people not communicating and sticking their noses where they don't belong.
It's possible she already did ask Hoshigasaki, and Hoshigasaki brushed it off, leading to Hiragi thinking that Hoshigasaki is too nice to firmly reject MC, therefore Hiragi has to do it for her. But... now that I've said that, we should have been shown that in the story, so I think I agree with you that Hiragi should do a better job of communicating.
