My guess is the fungi manipulates its human victims by creating hallucinations using their own memories. Which implies the fungi is able to access the victims' brains and nervous systems directly. It might also explain why the two male leads were suddenly tougher and more composed under duress (more so in Umi's case) - they were both already somewhat mushroom'd which increases their pain tolerance and mental fortitude, perhaps by altering their senses to be less perceptive of pain and stress.

The fungi's level of control over the cave dwellers also seems to not be as monolithic/all-encompassing as previously thought. We saw that Hajime was guided by one of them, who perhaps still retained some humanity, or the creature felt a sense of camaraderie as fellow victims of Mama Mountain.
