Spot on. And he has this strange relationship with Kitami because he's the only one to show his hatred towards Aliens and this was caused by Lilly killing his family. I recall Lilly said they spoke in the hospital, Kitami probably said something along the lines to "I'll never forgive you" and "I'll kill you". The bag could in fact be empty, and its a body bag for Kitami to put Lilly in after he kills him.

I wonder if this will bomb in Japan because of a disconnect with real world foreigner sentiment

My prediction is that the sister and Lally get along (secretly be boyfriend and girlfriend ot something or maybe just genuine friends) only for other aliens to show up and bully Lally for racemixing. Lally is killed either by himself or by the bullys and Lilly is forced by other aliens to crash into the family's car. He might be forced to do this at the threat of his own life, the aliens would want to do this to preserve alien honor and dignity (or something silly like that, think of like the arabic honor-killings or something) I think Lilly has some extreme guilt or hatred towards aliens because of this whole ordeal, he has lost his brother so the only thing moving him forward is an attempt at redemption?

I think we're all glossing over something important, unless I've misunderstood something. Lally is an adult alien in this flashback, he's just attending middle school. He looks like a child because of a genetic condition or something. The school admins know this, because Lilly told them, and are allowing him anyway out of the same overly polite deference they saw on the train.

(also, lets try to not think too hard about how Lilly and Lally are the same age, and very clearly older than middleschoolers)

While initially this could be seen as intensely creepy, we've never been given any real information on how the aliens function as a species on a biological level, aside from the fact that their trunks stiffen upon death and are used in cunnilingus.

So, the less sketchy option is that the aliens all grow fast to their full height, but mature at a pace slower than their growth rate, meaning that Lally and Lilly are, in fact, just huge middle schoolers
