So, is that a "he" or a "She"?
Most likely a "she" and it will be revealed she thought she could on't be "strong" by pretending to be a "he."
It's supposed to be "he" instead of "she"....
Likely a "she" as that's how these usually go when it starts with the "childhood friend" pretending to be a boy or is so tomboyish that they seem to be a boy.
So he waited until his friend is beaten like that before using his powers. Oh well.
Agree. Other than the line by Medis about the female cult leader being a heretic and the confusion around that possibly meaning summoners are heretics, which could be a translation issue, he knew summoners existed in this world. He just had to pretend to be a super talented, super powerful, prodigious summoner, but nooooo...author wanted to do the hide-your-power-trope.

Yeah, absolute stand up guy.

This dude is almost as bad as a MC from another manga I read where the hero just watches a slave trader order two kids (a little boy and little girl) to be bait and run into a monster so the slave trader can run away. The MC just sits there and thinks to himself "not my problem" but once the little boy dies, he rushs in to save the little girl saying some bullshit like "it can't be helped"

So much for that promise to not use his powers without the maid, nor to ever show them to anyone else.

Maybe a she, but her father/mother wanted a son and raised her as such, so now she identifies herself as a male.
Bobby: "Kahn Jr.?"
Connie: "Yeah?"
Bobby: "Why are you named Kahn Jr.?"
Connie: "My father wanted a boy."
Bobby: "So did mine."

Yeah, absolute stand up guy.

It seems to be the point of this beginning of the story to shock the MC enough to turn him into a better person. The first chapter already stated he was an arrogant bastard in his first life. He drew the conclusion that chasing fame and wealth was what caused him to die as a bitter, lonely man, so this time he got the idea that if he remains a nobody, he will live happily ever after. Maybe that would have actually worked if nothing bad had ever happened in the neighbourhood. In a peaceful world, nobody needs to be a hero. Well, it's not a peaceful world, as he's slowly realising.
