I have so many questions about the paintings. Like how alive are they exactly? Is each one a monster? From the first season of the anime...

...it looks more like the paintings are the mad mage's memories. The real mad mage even seemed to remember Laios from them and I don't think they are time travel.

But if so why did one painting follow them with it's eyes and why do they trap people?
