Basilisks are the ones that cause petrification. Cockatrices cause instakill / rot effects.
The author of this series is smart with people and worldbuilding generally, but they sure are taking liberties in this regard.

They are basically the same thing. They have similar depictions. If you look at the Wikipedia articles for both, they have basically the same abilities and weaknesses.
