Yet his superhuman strength + rod did absolutely nothing to the thing. So any comparisons you're trying to make to real-world creatures on the strength of this thing's skull are moot. Clearly its skeletal structure is incredibly strong, and considering this thing seems to make beak attacks fairly normally, one could assume it has a very tough skull that can absorb shock easily - otherwise, even with the weapon not piercing its skull, it should have been stunned from the direct powerful attack to its head. It was not.

Simple logic still apply. If you target skull, more effective to use crushing weapon.

Also, why golems release gryphon?

Actually, he could've killed the griffin if he'd had enough salt. It's blood pressure would've sky rocketed if he'd dropped enough salt in its ass. That beast would've stroked out.
