Story involving multiple timelines tends to get over complicated and confusing. This one doesn't. Mashima really can write if he wants to. Hope he keeps it up.

@Sonaldo Agreed, it can be tricky. I think what is probably working well here is that there is only ever one timeline actively going. It isn't jumping constantly between them but rather it's kept linear from our perspective, and even this additional variable, that being the captain, seems like he merely slips from one to the next in some manner.
