@Nep - Highland sounded like the bad guys about since the time they said they provide weapons and artifacts.
80% chance they also make monsters to ensure everybody is dependent on them.
50% chance the weapons have a switch that will shut them off, allowing monsters to overrun everybody and kill humanity, just as planned.

Still the heart of a man eh? Wonder how he is holding up with his periods. Just simple curiosity.
He was a war hero and a king so squeamishness with blood would be a bit less.
And now a possible beatdown is coming. Aw Yeah!

@Metasepia Not just that but if we are talking about actual human history as well human life expectancy for the average person (esp commoners) was extremely low compared to now. Like at most the average life expectancy was 30. With men and women dying off very early usually in their early twenties because of wars, poverty and diseases - nobles aren't free from this either.

So if you wanted an heir you'd have to marry off at a very young age (12-16) and expected to have a child. Not saying it's okay to oogle underaged kids, but a bit of perspective for back then and why they did that sort of thing.

@all the "who"s: Rahal was the boy from chapter 2 and 3 who cheated against the knights by dueling them using magic.

@Vinh Hopefully these "old men" (Anything between 20-50) are looking at her with thoughts of their kids marrying her, instead of thinking of themselves. But yes, thank whatever higher power you want for the discovery of modern medicine so we don't have this archaic way of thought any more.

@flannan I know they sound like bad guys and are probably one too (since they foreshadowed a "takeover the country" thing.) That being said, they shouldn't be waving war in their faces aka "starting trouble". However bad the other nation is, enemy envoys should be treated with a "certain amount of respect" while you plot against their nation behind their backs.

I've read a few Chinese novels so I use that as lessons for my opinion. Usually the 'villains' love provoking the MC so much to the point the MC has a valid reason/obtain new ways to kick their asses. Sometimes, these 'villains' open up even more ways to get into trouble by doing things that would normally get them executed (and only surviving because of plot armor). E.g Highlanders here can use excuse of their envoys being treated with disrespect to end trade/start a war without losing reputation with other nations. Otherwise they would have to risk their reputation, causing other nations to realize that the Highlanders are screwing them over with their 'offers'

Regardless of whether the highlanders are bad guys, the fact is that they have a "cooperative+upper hand relationship" with the current authority which may or may not be pro-highlanders. Antagonizing envoys isn't going to help the cause one bit...

...Then Rahal appears and I say "Nvm. Worth it."

@Vinh The myth of human having a life expectancy of like 30 or 40 years is based on the fact that if you had 8 kids 5 of them would die before the age of 5. It's a stat heavily skewed due to very high child mortality rate but anyone who made it into their 20's and 30's generally live into their 50's and 60's.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Life_expectancy#Variation_over_time

As you can see from the chart, life expectancy was based around living part a certain age after which you were pretty much in the clear.

As far as wars goes most had very low casualty rates as most wars were small clashes were they were routed at like 5 percent losses. IIRC once an army loses 20% of it's soldiers it is considered basically wiped out.

Highland introduced: A citystate, highly developed in magic, you can't invade, because it is floating in the sky. And it happens to sell very expensive, magical tools, that are necessary to fight magical beasts, that come into existence, after magical rain falls from the sky. An evil person could now suggest to follow the flow of money and power, but of course there is nothing fishy about that whole thing. Well, it could be, that they are behind the rain, but it could also be possible, that they aren't the culprits. Therefore we can safely assume, that they are innocent and don't worry about the fact, that nobody is investigating this. An absolutely flawless logical conclusion.
