He wanted to become a slave in order to send money to his parents? Young Reid was either very dumb or had no understanding what a slave really is.
I think it was to be the proceeds of selling himself to the slavers that would help his parents. There are historic examples of people selling themselves to benefit their family/village, especially in the Far East.

Yeah i would have also expected some explanation. Maybe some drama with Elria as he helped a beautiful queen. How could he went to help another country as the hero if his country was at war and he was the only person to stop the sage?

I assume he intended to sell himself into slavery, with the proceeds from that sale going to his parents.
It wouldn't be much, but his options were limited.

Emperor had it coming.

Bro may have supported the empire, but there was little loyalty, his loyalty and their groups was to the hero Reid
So when Emps started shit talking the hero after he died that tangential shred of loyalty was burnt to ash and cinders.
Extrapolating a bit...

It also made it shockingly clear that the emperor had no respect for even the best of the people fighting for him. They were putting their lives on the line for him so that he could... mock them behind their backs and spit on their graves. That's not the deal soldiers expect, particularly not for bona fide legends.

This attitude probably extended to all the country's people. If that's how little he thinks of the hero, and how willing he is to show it in front of Reid's grieving subordinates... what does he think of the people who AREN'T out there dying for his sake?

He illustrated in just a few seconds that he was not deserving of his throne.

It’s pretty disappointing compared to the time travel theory that’s been floated where he’s stronger than the sage because a future version of her gave him her magic that manifested physically to save him so he didn’t die from illness as a child.
Making her the chosen one and him the one the chosen one chose.

Instead here it’s pretty much just One For All where the concept of a past hero is introduced but the cost is there’s no more suspense over what happens in the future that necessitated her giving up her magic to save him and there’s no bookending.
I'll be real, that sounds like a terrible theory and the idea that the trope of old heroes passing down their powers started with Hero Academia is silly.

I don’t think it’s any more terrible than a guy randomly showing up and saying I’ll give you all my power because you’re wise enough to become a slave and nice enough to say you’d be my friend.
It also contradicts prior chapters where he says he doesn’t know the source of his strength. He died an old man and he’s had two lifetimes to consider that maybe when he got super strength the next day that his super strength came from meeting that person.

Maybe he does not remember due to magic? Because when he woke up he said he could not remember his "Dream". Maybe that is also the reason Rufus could not clearly remember the name of the teacher male elf.

I wouldn't say he shows up out of nowhere because he obviously has connections to "teach" and a random encounter with a stranger might not be that memorable to a six year old. It's never stated that he was granted all his strength the very next day so you might just be confusing yourself.
