Its been a while since I've read the novels but I remember it was more like enemies turned friends. The dude in the backstory is the male mc.

My assumption would be the hero got the job thrown on his head to kill her as she is a danger for humanity. But the witch seems to be a person, who just wants to enjoy her own life, but got hit with the power of a witch (and it's own problems).

The signals of her being alone, being ostracized in a previous chapter etc pp makes it plausible at least for me.
