I feel like the premise of this very series is saying "no" to that and posits that life experience isn't the same as mental age. Being able to see them as a romantic interest inherently means they seem like adults, even if they'll always have less life experience.

The problem here is specifically that she evidently still does see him as a child when most elves with human partners don't.
