Wasn't the axe. The artist/author apparently had severe health issues. Bad enough that they couldn't just put the series on hold and decided instead just to end it.

I suppose there's always the chance that if the 3 chapters that got out are positively received enough it could get a do-over/reboot, but I'm not holding my breath.

Japan: Has so many cases of people (especially mangaka it seems) working themselves to the point of serious issues or death that "lol exploitative work culture" is a standard media trope that nobody bats an eye at.
