I'm not exactly a fan of this one. It almost makes the cursed doll sound like it has super-powers, since it could apparently freeze the woman AND mind-control multiple people at the same time AND drive a truck, all from whatever far-away landfill it ended up in. If it has that level of power, then these peeps are screwed because this super-spirit can easily hunt them relentlessly out of spite at this point, and there's nothing they can do.

I guess it's a case of trying to do too much with your spooky goast here.

She talks about Tsukumogami, but Reiko doesn't match any of the types of doll yokai that I know of. She's more like a ripoff of Annabelle or Robert. Heck, I checked my favorite site, and there are no doll tsukumogami.

And here is a good question... why did his dad not call a priest to deal with this clearly possessed doll after his wife died to avoid all of this?!

Yeah, in the same way Amityville Horror is "based on a true story" yet the priest featured in the book and movie never spoke to the family except by phone, and the winter where they claimed to see burning hoofprints in the snow was mild and snowless that year.

Have you seen The Grudge? Japanese ghosts or in this case, haunted objects, don’t really follow any rules. The doll having that kind of power actually feels in line with how spirits operate in Japanese horror - once the curse sets its sights on you, escape isn’t really an option.

Have you seen The Grudge? Japanese ghosts or in this case, haunted objects, don’t really follow any rules. The doll having that kind of power actually feels in line with how spirits operate in Japanese horror - once the curse sets its sights on you, escape isn’t really an option.

Even the ghost in the grudge had rules - you had to enter their house as a trigger, for instance. Anyone who died to the curse, THEIR house got cursed, and so on. I'm fairly familiar with other horror series - curses like these pop up in multiple series, and I can even accept the influence of Great Ones like Ura Baito and Nikubami have, and the hopelessness and raw power they bring. This one particular cursed doll just feels out of band compared to other "equivalent" stories - like, a change as small as "the doll had physically tracked her down" instead of remote possession would have made things flow so much better.

tsukumogami is just spirit of items in general, sometimes a tskumogami have specific name in certain parts of Japan. Usually after an item reach certain age they gain sentience to become a tsukumogami. Though I can agree not calling priest for the doll, cause usually they kept cursed item or burn old item in a ceremony which iirc related to stopping tsukumogami.

The series up to now have been very mediocre. The art is subpar and doesn't really have that "holy shit" panel moment. The pacing also doesn't feel good. Like I can't describe it but good horror manga have a way to amp up the scare. Either gradually or suddenly. This series just feel like stuff happening. Like look at this story. Should've built up the doll creepiness some more before making the sudden jump to it having superpower to control people
