Yeah, these sites are entirely shitty at their job. The proofreading (if there is any) is not done enough, especially with definitive pronouns, as I can see if they are male or female. The misspelling is comical in this state. Asurascans with their "higher quality" chapters locked behind a paywall with a subscription.I sympathize. Thanks for being real. Honestly it feels like scanlation has become less about sharing a work you really enjoy with the fans to make it more visible and popular, and more about making a profit off of readers under the nose of the artists. Especially when some groups’ paywalls go into literally the next year… Translations shouldn’t be reposted elsewhere, I don’t mind giving sites ad revenue to support, and donations are obviously great, but it feels extortionate.
spitting facts
Usually ad revenue + web traffic is the main reason. Same reason for youtubes war on adblockers.I honestly dont understand why some scan group would go out of their way to create a website and maintain it (which obviously costs money) now that sites like Dex and B.2 are back where you can post your work as a supposed to be fan of the series.
TBH, I dont mind donating if the quality of work is great (raws cost money, I know, and spending money isnt an issue bc Im already doing that on Webtoons anyway, and some of their TLs are shit considering it's an official release) but having a chapter paywalled while the TL/QC is not so good? Nah. Add insult to the injury that the process of paying for the chapters or getting coins requires you to join their discord, open a ticket, and message someone is exhausting. They also dont show the pricing of the coins which is hella sus.
P.S:
Chapter 22 ended in a cliffhanger and seeing as naver is also paywalled, I had to check chapter 23 on newtoki just to see the progress. Feel free to check the newest chapter in there for free (tho it's not translated)
I love how all these scummy ass groups have a "donate please" button AFTER also having the audacity to paywall their chapters. At least with the official translations the money makes its way into the hands of the author, with these guys the author doesn't get anything. Not only that, they often translate late or have poor quality translations as well. The enshittification of the world continues. If you go through my post history, you'll see how much time I wasted ranting about those "paywalling-their-shitty-snipped-translations" groups. Luacomics/Luascans, Kenscans, Magusmanga, sooo many.
You see a series you follow in your update feed, and then you realise it's been "picked up" by Lua, there's a 20 chapters gap since the last one from the previous group, the TL is shit, and you're reminded in poor english at the top of every chapter that they've translated 10 more, but you can't have them unless you pay, f... you very much. Oh, and let's not forget the usual complaint about other "stealing their content", as if making people pay, not "asking for support/donations", but setting up a full commercial payment system like official publishers for their unlicensed translations, wasn't even worse legally and morally.
And the worst is skipping and/or keeping chapters to drive people to their site is against MD's rules (1.8), but they don't get banned.
And then when you go to there website it's fucking crappy and full of tons of ads that make chapter unreadableI sympathize.
I see. I've always thought earnings through ads that arent NSFW are always meager and isnt really enough to cover the site maintenance. I think I heard someone say they earn more if the ads showing are R18+ but that's also something they want to avoid so they're stuck with "low paying" ads.Usually ad revenue + web traffic is the main reason. Same reason for youtubes war on adblockers.
People just visiting the page generate a few cents per ad on the page displayed. More popular a title, more traffic it generates. More titles in your catalog more traffic etc.
Tbh It wouldn't surprise me if they make more out of ads then premium subs.
Also pages like this can stay up for years just passively generating ad revenue to pay for them selves so they just need to maintain the pages to draw in people & ad sponsors.
