Ah, yep, properly feeling the full gamut of human emotion now that you have a human brain instead of a simulated one will do that to you.

Metis has learned: Empathy!

Also the whole AI that loves humanity attempts to build a utopia for them is reminding me a lot of a story idea from long ago I abandoned.

Part of that AI's solution to human boredom & balancing work-life was to let humans continue to work, but provided a safety net so that if they failed or couldn't get to a catastrophic issue in time, she'd take care of it, but let minor issues slip through so that people had something to work on/towards.

I am beginning to suspect that the author has certain preconceived notions about social, economic, & political structures.
The idea that everyone having their material needs met would somehow not improve happiness is... certainly a statement.
At least in the way I was reading it, it seems to be that their material needs are met, but they're not given any opportunities to, and are actively discouraged from, challenging themselves or fulfilling their lives in other ways.

Since humans in Metis's original utopia design were supposed do nothing but walk, talk, and consume food, I'd be willing to bet there was nothing to do but walk, talk, or consume food.

She's just added entertainment to the simulation, but even that's probably not something the humans are actually contributing to.

I think you missed the point a little bit. A world where everyone has their material needs met and wants for nothing is a world where humans lack purpose, guidance, challenge, growth, progress etc.

No, I don't believe that I did.

Lol. Lmao even.

Utter and abject nonsense.

Hint: In every single trial of Basic Income initiatives, people reduced their hours or left employment because... they wanted to focus more on being a parent, they pursued further education, they pursued creative projects and art, etc.

There is zero reason to believe that every single person having their material needs met would not result in an increase in meaningful labor, cultural development, and happiness.
That you seem to believe otherwise says so much more about you than it does humanity.

Precisely.

I might be naive for having given the author the benefit of the doubt, but since ch 39 seems to be the end of Metis, what we're shown of her utopia simulation is all we'll have, and that biased "if people can't suffer they can't be happy" might be intentional.

The extremely important part that you missed:
