Everyone is a sucker for 'goods' on discount. :haa:

Its really odd they called her a bad purchase. They pretty clearly establish that female slaves in general are much more expensive, but she was around 1/4th the base price because she hadn't been washed and sick. Now if it was a hard to treat or expensive to treat disease that would make sense. But
they just stop by a priest in the next few chapters and commonly used treatment clears it, yes it costs a little bit, but total of treatment plus her cost doesn't even come close to the base cost of a female slave let alone a one of the beastkin races which are more expensive.
So yeah why she was sold at a discount when the slave trader could just have cleaned and treated her so they could sell her for 4 to 5 times the price makes no sense. No matter how you look at it she was a great bargain.

Hmmm... even owning slaves gets taxed. Just like the modern world, no matter where you go, there's always some kind of tax waiting for you :haa: Anyway, Mina is really cute in this chapter.

There is this rising thing called the rising of Raphtalia hero trope. :wooow:
Longer answer though, she looks bruised and beat, not an exaggeration to say she is not even good for SEGS, and even more so for combat, means she is just a dead weight. She even needs more money to pay for her treatment, of WHICH still unclear if it can fix her totally or not. Naturally the seller will not take that gamble and just put a damaged goods in discount, aka a bad purchase.

Is slavery in isekais just a free bingo slot?
Considering that most isekai are inspired by the fantasy genre, which is inspired by Earth's history, it would be very strange and jarring not to include it.

It is also a great way to show the MC's personality. Is he eager to use it, begrudgingly uses it or abolishes it.

Shield hero popularized the trope. And now every isekai hero must have their own Raphtalia.
I would not even be surprised if mangakas and novel writers would be sick and tired of this trope, but they keep using it cause the editors consider it a well selling trend and keep demanding it.

Supply meets demand. It's a really easy way to introduce a character that eventually falls for the MC despite their flaws, making it a core wish fulfillment setup. Many of these stories are self-insert and having women fall for you randomly without having good looks, amazing talent or incredible wealth is rather hard to believe. Having things you can relate to or aspire to is an important feature to help sell a product.

It also pairs well with isekai as a whole. Mc will need a local info source, and often needs to hide ether their own ignorance of the world or powers. As they have no connections they will need somone they can trust, or that cant betray them.
