Overprotective characters who exist only to stop the leads from getting closer have always been and will always be annoying, which is the worst thing a character can be.

Nah, you guys just don’t see the charm. It’s like the slow, relentless breaking down of a classic tsundere until they’re forced to accept the protagonist, just in this case, they aren’t the love interest, they’re just a support character for the love interest instead. The eventual begrudging acceptance that the protagonist is the best is still there though, so you still get the main appeal without the potential domestic violence that otherwise comes standard with the archetype.
