I don't know, they don't say anything about this in the MangaUP user description. If the reason was clarified it would have been better and understandable.

• The service buys license for a certain manga
• Service that bought license starts releasing chapters for profit
• Chapters start to disappear from another service that didn't pay for license and technically had no right to publish them in the first place

I hope it started to make sense now, after splitting the situation down into steps.

Hate to break it to you but 99.9% of "free" manga here are simply pirated and translated by fans for other fans to read.
So when some entity buys a license (and usually expects to earn money from it) they request "their bought content" to be taken down from pirate websites.
If a simple request to remove their licensed product doesn't work - they might use legal leverage to take down the whole platform. This did happen before with countless other manga sites.
